Chapter 28: Megalomaniac
“Who… who are they?” Jian Wei looked at Dr. Lin and Ji Yueling as they walked in, timidly asking Gu Qing.
“This is the doctor who’s been taking care of you for the past four years. As for her, she’s my friend, though you don’t need to know her. Well, since you’re awake, finish your apple and get ready to be discharged. Your mother has been waiting for you at home for so long—she misses you terribly.”
“Okay.” Jian Wei nodded obediently.
At that moment, Ji Yueling’s body trembled uncontrollably as she looked at Jian Wei. She opened her mouth to speak several times but ultimately said nothing, only turning her face away as tears silently fell.
Dr. Lin walked out of the ward with Gu Qing and Ji Yueling. The next instant, Ji Yueling grabbed his collar and pinned him against the wall, pressing close to his body until their faces nearly touched. “What did you do to her?”
“Forgetting,” Gu Qing repeated once more.
“Forgetting… what?”
Perhaps Ji Yueling’s anger was also a form of hysteria—anger being just an expression of unease and fear. Meanwhile, Gu Qing’s face maintained that same indifferent expression. “She forgot the memories about you, forgot everything after her first year of high school. Now she won’t suffer anymore, will she?”
“Don’t worry. She’s completely lost those memories. She won’t remember them in any way in the future. Even if others tell her about it, she won’t be moved—at most, she’ll just be confused. As for whether to hide the truth from her, that’s your choice. Of course, I think hiding it is meaningless. It’s just better to tell her after she’s settled down.”
Gu Qing calmly explained to Ji Yueling what had happened after she made her choice. Ji Yueling stared at him intently, the anger in her eyes gradually melting away, but those dark pupils slowly became confused instead.
She slowly released Gu Qing’s collar and asked softly, “How did you do it?”
If it were possible to delete Jian Wei’s memories so easily with just a few words, that would certainly be unreasonable.
Gu Qing didn’t mind explaining seriously to Ji Yueling: “Because I used the language of demons.”
“The language of demons?”
Clearly, Ji Yueling had only heard Gu Qing speaking human language. Gu Qing quickly resolved her confusion: “Some high-level demons—their language consists of vibrational tones. I added those same vibrations to my words. The language of high-level demons is a command to lower beings, so I used this demonic command in my speech, ordering her to forget you, to forget all memories after her first year of high school.”
Ji Yueling understood Gu Qing’s meaning, but the next moment she realized she’d been deceived again, staring at him intently. “You clearly told me you were only E-level…”
“I am indeed only E-level, but the key point is that she already wanted to forget those memories. And do you think using such an ability comes without a price?”
Gu Qing seemed somewhat helpless. Ji Yueling froze, and as her anger gradually cooled, she suddenly noticed that Gu Qing’s face was extremely pale, his voice already somewhat unclear. Suddenly his throat moved, and he pushed Ji Yueling away before beginning to cough violently, crimson blood sliding from the corner of his mouth.
Ji Yueling panicked, reaching out to place her hands on him, trying to use her energy to heal his injuries. But in that instant, she suddenly felt “pain.”
The moment her energy entered Gu Qing’s body, she sensed the “pain” surging within him. This pain spread to her mental world, making her body tremble as if electrocuted. But Gu Qing quickly pushed her away, wiping the corner of his mouth somewhat awkwardly. “It’s not a physical injury, but mental pain. Your ability is useless—this is a punishment.”
“Punishment?”
“Humans who borrow the rule-based power of demons naturally face punishment. Alright, go arrange Jian Wei’s discharge procedures. At times like this, just let me be alone.”
Gu Qing waved his hand, looking at Ji Yueling whose eyes were full of worry, and suddenly smiled again.
Still that slightly mocking, teasing smile.
From anger to suspicion to worry to self-blame—Ji Yueling’s emotions rose and fell. Today, Gu Qing had already seen many different expressions appear on her face. Turns out this woman didn’t only have a poker face.
Gu Qing walked toward the corridor, wanting to go to the hospital’s outdoor courtyard to get some sun.
Ji Yueling knew Gu Qing didn’t want her to follow. She bit her lip and returned to Jian Wei’s room, beginning to arrange her discharge procedures and weaving reasonable lies that she could accept in her current state. Meanwhile, Dr. Lin followed Gu Qing all the way to the courtyard.
The two sat down on an unused bench. Dr. Lin looked at Gu Qing’s pale face, and her face also showed a trace of contemptuous mockery.
Gu Qing said nothing, just silently took out the small knife he’d carried for years from his pocket and began cutting at his wrist, looking exactly like a depressed, self-harming teenager. His lips kept trembling, bright red blood flowing from his wrist. He didn’t cut deep—just enough to bleed, not to be fatal. Just pain, nothing more.
Overusing his ability brought pain. Physical pain would ease mental pain. He silently watched the blood flow from his wrist, while Dr. Lin beside him showed no surprise or confusion—she was already used to it.
During the two months Gu Qing had stayed at Qiming City’s psychiatric hospital, she had bandaged his wounds many times.
“I don’t envy your talent,” she suddenly said. “I just don’t understand you. You’re a patient I can never cure.”
“It’s fine.” Gu Qing shook his head.
This was Qiming City’s best psychiatric hospital, and Dr. Lin, only twenty-seven this year, already had an exceptionally outstanding record. She was an undeniable genius in the field of psychiatric pathology. This psychiatric hospital also handled psychological treatment for many Alliance personnel after they suffered trauma, so the attending physicians here actually held extremely high positions in society.
“You already guessed?” she suddenly asked Gu Qing.
“It wasn’t hard to guess. Ji Yueling clearly looks like someone on the verge of breakdown too…”
“So you want to treat her?”
“Of course not. You know that everyone has issues—there’s no need to correct them to some so-called standard. I just got tangled up with her. I’d already repaid the favor I owed the Ji family, though it’s unclear whether it’s really settled. But then I met her, and one favor leads to another in an endless mess. It’s so troublesome.”
This was the truth.
“I’m suddenly a bit envious of her,” Dr. Lin said.
“Envious of what?” Gu Qing didn’t understand, switching the knife to his other hand to continue cutting.
“Earlier you said that women who get close to you become illogical and start talking nonsense. At the time, I thought that was just delusional ranting from someone with borderline personality disorder having a manic episode.”
“Huh?”
“After you left, I believed it.” Dr. Lin sighed softly. “What do you really look like?”
“How I appear in your eyes is how I really am.”
But Dr. Lin just sighed and shook her head. “You’ve never even asked for my name.”
“We’re not from the same world.” Gu Qing was rarely this gentle.
“Do you still want to touch my breasts now?”
The conversation suddenly took a turn. Dr. Lin glanced at him, her eyes no longer as dignified as they were in front of Ji Yueling, but rather somewhat mischievous. Gu Qing scratched his head and shook it. “Not anymore. It was just curiosity back then.”
“Sometimes I really wonder if you’re human.”
“I’m definitely human.” Gu Qing’s tone returned to that confident manner. “Human blood flows through my body—red blood!”
As he spoke, he showed Dr. Lin his wrist, which he’d accidentally cut too deep and was now spurting bright red blood like a small fountain.
Dr. Lin said nothing more, just silently got up to fetch a medical kit and sat beside him, carefully and gently bandaging his wound.
When Ji Yueling finished arranging everything for Jian Wei, Gu Qing’s hands were already wrapped with two layers of gauze. Ji Yueling paused, then heard Gu Qing explain: “Cut myself with a knife to ease the mental pain. Heal me up.”
Gu Qing extended both hands toward her. Ji Yueling reached out to heal the wounds on his hands. The earlier bandaging was just to prevent excessive blood loss—Ji Yueling’s healing ability worked quickly on injuries, though his blood loss was another matter.
Dr. Lin stood quietly beside Gu Qing, saying softly, “Alright, I’ll handle everything for Jian Wei from here. You two can leave.”
Gu Qing naturally had no reason to stay, and now neither did Ji Yueling. So she returned to Gu Qing’s side. But Dr. Lin, carrying her medical kit, walked a few steps before suddenly turning back. She straightened her slender waist and looked at Gu Qing. “I guess you’ll never come back here again, and we’ll never meet again. So I’ll ask you one last time—you really won’t touch them?”
“No, no.” Gu Qing immediately shook his head and hurriedly turned to leave, his expression becoming somewhat flustered as he thought that you really can’t offend women—women are scary and scheming creatures.
Ji Yueling quickly caught up with Gu Qing’s pace. In the sunlight, her eyes were alert and confused. “What she said about ‘not touching’—touching what?”
Gu Qing made an evil gesture. “Touching boobs.”
The next moment, Ji Yueling’s eyes fixed on him coldly. “What’s your relationship with her? What does that mean? Tell the truth!”
The next moment, her head was knocked by Gu Qing’s lollipop. Gu Qing unhurriedly unwrapped the candy wrapper and said helplessly, “Don’t talk to me in that tone of a legitimate girlfriend catching cheating. You’re not interrogating a criminal. At most, we’re half friends.”
“When I was at the psychiatric hospital, I read many books, but just reading books is useless, so I often discussed the knowledge from books with her. We occasionally talked about what men’s desire for breasts actually comes from, and I wanted to put theory into practice by borrowing hers to touch. Not only did she coldly refuse, but she also increased my medication that night and nearly put me in a straitjacket.”
“Then why did she suddenly ask you that?”
“Because she’s jealous of my talent and misunderstood our relationship, so she wanted to create misunderstandings to make you jealous. That’s the scary thing about women—when they hold a grudge against you, they can even abandon shame to try to anger you.”
“I think it’s more than just jealousy…” Ji Yueling’s tone seemed somewhat sour.
“Behind jealousy is admiration.” Gu Qing chuckled, not hiding his pride and satisfaction.
“Megalomaniac.” After saying this, Ji Yueling suddenly paused.
She suddenly realized that Gu Qing’s pride and satisfaction didn’t seem unreasonable
