Chapter 49: No Longer Angry
Ji Fan didn’t have time to respond to Ji Yueling’s words. He first kicked K’s head several times with his leather shoes, confirming that he was now unconscious but not fatally injured, then crouched down and put Alliance-issued energy suppression handcuffs on him.
The cigarette in his hand finally burned out completely. After searching the room for an ashtray without success, he simply pried open K’s mouth and stuffed the cigarette butt inside.
Ji Yueling stared dumbfounded at the man before her.
Ji Fan was also looking at her.
The father and daughter didn’t communicate much normally.
Back when Ji Yueling was still in high school, Ji Fan was always dealing with Alliance affairs, keeping his distance from Ji Yueling. He didn’t want his two daughters involved in the world of Transcendents and demons.
Later, when Ji Yueling had her incident and her abilities awakened, she joined the Alliance.
So he began paving the way for his daughter. Ji Yueling’s ability to join the combat team with her primary medical abilities was partly due to his influence. He personally selected the most suitable teammates for Ji Yueling to ensure her safety, even placing an S-class ability user in the team whose primary mission was to protect her life.
These were all things Ji Yueling might not necessarily know.
The last time father and daughter met was during New Year’s, and his advice ultimately ended in failure.
“Most of the demons from the fighting club are here with you… As your father, I had to come take a look.” Ji Fan looked at Ji Yueling’s somewhat dazed expression. He actually didn’t quite know how to talk to his own daughter.
He could only give Ji Yueling very little companionship when she was young. Later, when Ji Yueling was kidnapped by Old Tao, it was also because of his pursuit of the Taotie Society that caused Old Tao to harbor resentment. Somehow Old Tao learned about Ji Yueling’s relationship with him. Unable to get revenge on Ji Fan, he tried to drive Ji Yueling insane instead.
“Who told you to come?” Ji Yueling asked slowly.
“Of course I came rushing over when I received news that so many demons were gathering at your place, worried you might have gotten into some trouble…” Ji Fan answered naturally, but the next moment Ji Yueling pressed aggressively, “Wasn’t it because of Gu Qing?”
“You should stay away from that kid.” Speaking of this, Ji Fan’s tone became more serious, yet also seemed to carry a hint of helplessness.
“Why?” Ji Yueling tilted her head.
“Just listen to me. I’m your real father, I won’t harm you.” Ji Fan sighed.
“If you don’t explain it clearly to me, I won’t listen.”
Ji Fan could only look at her helplessly, knowing she was being stubborn again. He just shook his head helplessly, glanced at K lying on the floor, stepped over his body, and sat down in a chair.
He didn’t know what sins he’d committed—both his daughters seemed entangled with that guy. He never should have made that deal with the kid in the first place.
“Who exactly is he?” Ji Yueling’s eyes stared fixedly at Ji Fan before her.
“Is that any way to talk to your father?” Ji Fan sighed helplessly. His slight agitation made him unconsciously reach for his cigarette pack, but just as he was about to light up, he heard Ji Yueling’s even more impatient voice: “No smoking in my house.”
Ji Fan thought about it and could only put the cigarette down, now looking like a middle-aged man completely at a loss.
“Tell me what his actual strength is, at least that should be okay?” Ji Yueling took a deep breath and chose a different way to ask.
“It should be E-class Demon Speech now, he told me so.” Ji Fan pondered for a moment before answering.
“Why are you lying to me along with him?”
“Why would I lie to you?” Ji Fan looked at her with a mixture of crying and laughing. “His ability is E-class Demon Speech, but he can comprehend and master all demon languages. Even Imperial-class language, he can use, and Imperial-class demon language is the [Rules] themselves.”
“I… don’t quite understand.”
“Human language is one-sided, doesn’t represent truth, and can’t perfectly express the thoughts in one’s heart. But Imperial-class demon language is the world’s truth itself. When they describe fire, fire truly ignites. When they describe death, death truly comes.”
“Fortunately, his ability is only E-class, and extremely difficult to improve. Otherwise, if he reached EX-class, perhaps just by describing destruction, the world would be destroyed.”
“How do you know this?” Ji Yueling continued pressing.
“He told me.” Ji Fan hesitated. “I don’t know if he lied to me either, but it doesn’t matter, because even though he’s an extremely unstable factor, for certain reasons, as long as he doesn’t violate Qiming City’s rules, I absolutely cannot move against him.”
“Then how did he manage to kill all the middle management of the Plum Blossom Club? Or did you send people to act?”
“He acted himself. My people have also been tracking this matter.”
“Can E-class… really easily kill so many A-class?”
“That should be some kind of power the fighting club lent him, a consumable.”
Ji Fan’s expression became increasingly agitated and uneasy. Even though Ji Yueling was his own daughter, he shouldn’t reveal so much information to her. First, he had promised Gu Qing to keep his identity secret. Second, knowing so much wouldn’t benefit Ji Yueling—it would only drag her into deeper abyssal places.
So he held up a finger. “You can ask one last question, and I’ll choose whether to answer based on that question. It’s not that I want to hide things from you, but the fewer people who know his secrets, the better. The more you know, the more dangerous it becomes.”
Ji Yueling began thinking seriously.
Finally, she gently shook her head. “Forget it, I won’t ask.”
Ji Fan breathed a long sigh of relief, but after understanding why she didn’t ask, his expression inevitably became serious again. “I’m telling you very seriously, you should stay away from him, as far as possible.”
“I don’t want to.” Ji Yueling shook her head. “I’m an adult, I can be responsible for my own choices.”
Ji Fan stared seriously into her eyes. His mind was full of earnest words trying to persuade her to change her mind, but after a long silence, he ultimately said nothing.
“He should be finishing up soon too.” Ji Fan glanced out the window. It was now drizzling outside. His expression was somewhat complex as he watched for a while, then stood up and casually grabbed the now unconscious K, who was like a dead dog, apparently preparing to drag him out.
Just as he was about to walk out the door, Ji Yueling stood up.
“Dad.” She suddenly called out.
Ji Fan turned around and looked into her eyes.
Ji Yueling’s expression was somewhat complex, still showing that trace of stubbornness, but much softer than before. After two or three seconds of silence, she slowly spoke: “About Old Tao’s matter, I’m not angry with you anymore.”
Ji Fan was silent for a few seconds, then slowly said, “Once we get intelligence on him, I’ll take his head off for you.”
“I’ll do it myself.” Ji Yueling’s eyes became stubborn again.
After that incident happened, she could have asked Ji Fan to kill Old Tao at any cost, but she never said it.
She didn’t say it, so Ji Fan didn’t dare bring it up in front of her.
The flames of revenge had become the only motivation supporting Ji Yueling’s survival at that time. When the hatred completely melted away, the guilt in her heart would devour her entirely—either face the void of death directly, or become an empty shell like a walking corpse.
But now Ji Fan saw something else in Ji Yueling.
“That works too.” Ji Fan’s face finally showed a trace of a smile. “Make time to come home for dinner? You haven’t chatted with your sister in a long, long time, have you?”
His words seemed to hide some deeper meaning, but Ji Yueling didn’t notice at the moment. She just nodded lightly. “I’ll bring him along.”
“…” Ji Fan’s eye twitched slightly. “You’d better not.”
“Whether he comes or not is hard to say anyway.” Ji Yueling pouted.
Gu Qing had finished his ice-cold cola.
He lifted the cup and threw the ice cubes from the cola into his mouth, crunching them loudly. Only after eating all the ice cubes did he finally speak softly: “Five minutes should be about right.”
“Have you decided?” He raised his head, his eyes cold as ice as he looked at Q before him.
Q looked at the phone on the table.
She still hadn’t received a reply from K.
“Where is K now?”
“Should be on the way to Alliance prison in a transport vehicle by now.” Gu Qing answered indifferently.
Old Ji’s ability was Mortal Bone, which naturally countered order-breaking types like K’s Eternal Night Theater. K would even lose perception of Old Ji when activating Eternal Night Theater, so getting hit by an SS-class sneak attack from Old Ji was perfectly reasonable.
“Give me another five minutes to think.” Q raised her head, but her eyes had already shed all arrogance, leaving only pleading.
Gu Qing unhurriedly took out the revolver, loaded a bullet, and placed it on the table.
“Let’s play a game?” Gu Qing picked up the gun, aimed it at his temple, and pulled the trigger first.
“Let me see just how much courage you have to face death?”
Gu Qing bought another pink helmet at the store.
Using his phone’s camera, he confirmed once again that his silver-white eyes and silver-white hair had now returned to their ink-black appearance, and only then did he breathe a satisfied sigh of relief.
Even the scars on his body had quietly crept back up.
The white-haired monster form still looked too painful. He was past the age for being edgy.
Fortunately, he had been to Ji Yueling’s house twice before and was familiar with the route. Riding leisurely at maximum speed limit on the road, he arrived at Ji Yueling’s residential complex forty minutes later. He greeted the club members who were playing cards and barbecuing in the complex, saying it was over. Everyone breathed a sigh of relief and invited Gu Qing to join their card game and barbecue.
“Wait, let me call them down first.” Gu Qing smiled at them, went upstairs, came to Ji Yueling’s door, and knocked gently.
The door opened. When Ji Yueling saw it was him, all her vigilance instantly disappeared. Lu Qianqian was still sitting on the sofa, her cheeks still somewhat pale with lingering shock. Gu Qing spread his arms toward her: “Alright, it’s all over now. Come here for a hug, don’t be afraid, don’t be afraid.”
Lu Qianqian rushed into his arms.
