Chapter 11
Chapter 11: They Look Down on Us Completely
This trip, Nuomin had gone specifically to get medicine.
The purpose was so their livestock could safely arrive during the long three-day journey ahead.
Without medicine, even with Xie Changqing, even a clever woman can’t cook without rice!
Hearing this, Qiaoba immediately became anxious, frowning: “What happened? Why? The winter medicine should rightfully include our share!”
This had been arranged long ago, the same every year!
“Ah, I don’t know.” Haierte was also anxious. When Nuomin told him to quickly come tell Qiaoba, he immediately rode back.
Qiaoba immediately mounted his horse, his face full of anger: “I’m going right now to ask what’s going on!”
After riding out a distance, he stopped and turned back: “Come, Changqing, come with me!”
“Alright.” Xie Changqing spurred his horse to follow.
Sangtu stayed behind to continue leading the group, while the three of them went ahead.
Galloping all the way, they soon saw a wide river in the distance, winding toward the horizon.
Seeing them, Nuomin mounted her horse and galloped over.
After the two sides met, she looked at Qiaoba somewhat depressed: “Abu, they refuse to give us medicine, saying we don’t have a veterinarian so the medicine would be useless anyway.”
“How do they know?” Qiaoba instinctively asked, then remembered that Chaolu and the others had gone: “Chaolu told them?”
“No, they already knew before.” Nuomin thought about it and shook her head: “And also…”
She glanced at Xie Changqing, somewhat hesitating.
Xie Changqing was startled and said directly: “I’m fine, speak plainly.”
“…Okay.” Nuomin frowned, somewhat helplessly: “Before Xie Yu left, he sold all his medicine to the Sixth Ranch.”
He also got a sum of money from them for it.
For this, he even deliberately delayed a day.
After drinking some barley wine and getting drunk, he spilled everything about his own family.
Because of this, the Sixth Ranch was initially somewhat hesitant, but when they heard it was Xie Changqing who became the new veterinarian, they immediately burst into laughter.
But Xie Changqing keenly heard something wrong: “What about Chaolu and the others? Uncle Qiaoba told them about this.”
“Chaolu and the others didn’t enter the Sixth Ranch.” Nuomin said this with some resentment, but also some satisfaction: “The Sixth Ranch only wants to accept the young and strong and women. They won’t take children or elderly at all.”
Because of this, the matter got stuck here.
If they couldn’t enter the Sixth Ranch, how would those herders take the winter route?
Without a veterinarian, they didn’t dare move at all.
But to come back here, they had no face to meet Qiaoba.
“They won’t even take Chaolu and the others?” Qiaoba was somewhat doubtful.
“Oh, they want Chaolu and them, but Chaolu and the others are still discussing and haven’t agreed.”
When Nuomin went, they were almost getting into an argument.
Seeing her, Chaolu and the others looked terrible.
Originally thinking that Nuomin had also come to beg to join the Sixth Ranch, Chaolu was preparing to use Qiaoba’s influence.
What they never expected was that Nuomin actually said they already had a new veterinarian.
Once this news came out, the crowd immediately became somewhat chaotic.
Finally, it was only after the people from the Sixth Ranch harshly mocked Nuomin and drove her out without giving her any medicine that Chaolu and the others calmed down again.
Right, how could Xie Changqing possibly be a veterinarian?
He was an idiot!
“I was just thinking… if the Sixth Ranch won’t accept them, why did they drive me away when they were wavering…”
Nuomin had been pondering this all the way back.
Xie Changqing snorted and shook his head: “They’ll accept them. Right now they’re just putting on an act, waiting for the right moment to make their move.”
“Ah?” Both Nuomin and Haierte were somewhat shocked.
“That’s right.” Qiaoba sighed helplessly: “Looks like Chaolu still isn’t smart enough.”
Going there with so many people without knowing to set things up first, rushing in hot-headedly.
Once inside someone else’s ranch, if they had no say at all, wouldn’t they be at others’ mercy?
Stupid people don’t deserve sympathy.
Qiaoba didn’t even want to waste energy talking about him, looking directly at Xie Changqing: “Changqing, did you look at those herbs? Are they usable? If we need medicine, I’ll make the trip myself.”
“Oh, no need.” Xie Changqing now had his medical kit and completely looked down on that bit of medicine.
Today he saved that cow, so his points had definitely increased again.
When he saved more livestock later, what kind of medicine couldn’t he get?
Why should Uncle Qiaoba have to bow his head to those people?
Xie Changqing raised his chin confidently: “Don’t worry, I don’t lack that bit of medicine. Just with yesterday’s herbs, I can treat most conditions.”
“Good! That’s the spirit!” Qiaoba felt great inside too, patting his shoulder: “When we get to the winter pasture, I’ll get you some more medicine. We don’t want the Sixth Ranch’s medicine!”
“Besides, it has an expiration date. By next year it’ll be useless, let them hoard it.”
“Right, when it expires and becomes useless, it’ll make them furious!” Nuomin felt satisfied just imagining that scene.
They had no intention of going to the Sixth Ranch again, so they simply helped set up camp together.
But just as Xie Changqing reached out to help, Qiaoba stopped him: “Didn’t you say you needed to prepare medicine? You do that, Nuomin, come help.”
As for the rough work, they would handle it.
Xie Changqing didn’t argue and efficiently got busy.
It had to be said, Nuomin was truly a girl raised on the grasslands.
Carrying buckets and hauling water was completely effortless for her.
Especially since she understood a little bit of medicine, helping him as an assistant saved Xie Changqing considerable effort.
When the main group caught up with them, Batu was the first to jump down from the ox cart: “Aha! What are you doing!?”
This startled Nuomin, who quickly pulled him back and pushed him away: “Don’t come over, this is all prepared medicine.”
It was all medicine water that Xie Changqing had prepared with added magnesium sulfate, which all the livestock would need to drink later.
Because of this, even though all the cattle and sheep were extremely thirsty and the water source was right there, the herders still didn’t let them drink directly.
Only after everything was prepared did Xie Changqing finally let out a long breath: “Done.”
He pointed to the prepared water buckets: “One bucket per ten cattle, one bucket per twenty sheep. For horses, you can use a bit more—just add one scoop of this prepared solution to each bucket.”
If they had enough buckets, he would have prepared all the water in advance.
But they only had so many wooden buckets, so he could only prepare the concentrated solution first and let them mix it themselves.
“Great!”
Everyone was extremely excited, each rushing forward: “Thank you for your hard work, Changqing, go rest now.”
A herder brought over sheep’s milk that had been heated with stored firewood while Xie Changqing was busy working.
Generally speaking, when taking the winter route, to save time and effort, everyone ate dry food and tried to avoid heating anything.
Because of this, this bowl of hot sheep’s milk was particularly precious at this moment.
