Chapter 2: Lamb Dysentery
A medical kit!?
Tana’s eyes lit up with excitement. “That’s wonderful! Those medicines must still be there!”
As long as the medicines were still there, the hostility from the pasture people toward their family wouldn’t be so strong.
And Uncle Qiaoba wouldn’t have to take the risk of going to other pastures to ask for medicine.
Besides, Uncle Qiaoba was a good man. If he saved this wasted round trip, he might agree to take them along.
The two of them hurried home, only to discover that Uncle Qiaoba hadn’t come alone.
He’d brought Sangtu’s whole family with him.
Sangtu’s wife was usually quite gentle, but now her expression was very ugly as she stared at them, not even offering a greeting.
“Uncle Qiaoba…” Tana’s smile froze on her face.
“It’s like this.” Uncle Qiaoba sighed and patted the medical kit in front of them. “Sangtu says that before Dr. Xie left, he borrowed thirty jin of dried beef from them.”
He’d used the medical kit as collateral. Anyone would know how important a medical kit was to a veterinarian.
Out of trust in Xie Yu and Tana, Sangtu hadn’t even discussed it with his wife before readily lending out those thirty jin of dried beef.
When his wife heard about it, her eyes turned red with anger, and she was almost in tears. “That was our family’s food for the winter!”
“Ah!” Tana gasped softly.
Dried beef! Thirty jin of it! My goodness!
How could she possibly pay that back? She felt dizzy.
Xie Changqing frowned. When it rains, it pours.
Xie Yu really was inhuman.
Their situation was already so terrible, and at the end he’d given them one final blow.
“If it were just that, we wouldn’t have come looking for you…” Sangtu smacked his lips, somewhat helplessly. “Tana… my three ewes gave birth the day before yesterday, and now the lambs won’t nurse. This happened last year too, you know. Dr. Xie saved my lambs then…”
At the time, Xie Yu had said that if this condition wasn’t controlled promptly, it might spread.
Now they’d already separated all the sheep, but they didn’t know how to treat them.
They were reluctant to just give up on them.
Tana thought for a moment, then said hesitantly: “Is it called… lamb something disease?”
“Right, right! Lamb dysentery.” Sangtu nodded definitively. “That’s it!”
Lambs with dysentery became listless, lost their appetite, developed diarrhea, and gradually wasted away.
If not treated promptly, they would die quickly.
And now three lambs were showing symptoms. If they couldn’t get effective treatment, the other lambs might also…
The key was that this disease developed very rapidly.
Acute cases could die suddenly, with episodes lasting only a few hours to a dozen hours.
Even longer cases lasted only two to three days, at most a week.
The nearest pasture was at least two to three days’ round trip. Even if Qiaoba had to visit two pastures, even if he ran his horse to death, he wouldn’t make it in time.
“So we were thinking, maybe you might have a way…” Qiaoba patted the medical kit and looked at Tana. “This box has a mechanism… Can you open it, Tana?”
Sangtu’s wife glared hatefully at the medical kit and turned her head away. “I already shook it. It’s empty inside! There’s nothing at all!”
“Let me… let me try…” Tana wiped her hands on her clothes before daring to touch the medical kit.
Very carefully, afraid she might break the box.
In the past, Xie Yu had guarded his medical kit like his life.
He’d never let her touch it, much less tell her how to open it.
Seeing her like this, everyone felt somewhat disappointed.
Clearly, Tana didn’t dare take on the responsibility. She hadn’t even dared mention the thirty jin of dried beef.
“Well, let’s get the ugly truth out in the open.” Sangtu’s wife gritted her teeth. Though she felt somewhat sorry for them, for the sake of her own family, she had to say: “If you take this box, whether there’s anything inside or not, you have to acknowledge and repay those thirty jin of dried beef.”
Hearing this, Tana’s hands went limp.
The medical kit almost fell to the ground, but fortunately, Xie Changqing caught it.
“Oh my!” Everyone was startled, afraid it might break.
Xie Changqing was also startled.
Because he clearly heard a voice say: [Click, medical kit activation successful.]
What was going on?
His heart raced with excitement as he lifted the medical kit with one hand.
As if to confirm it for him, the voice sounded again: [Newbie gift pack has been sent. Accept?]
“Yes.” Xie Changqing nodded without hesitation.
[Successfully received. Please open.]
Xie Changqing’s eyes lit up, and he quickly pressed the switch.
To everyone’s amazement, the medical kit opened with a click.
Inside were a syringe and a vial of medicine.
“Oh? It opens that easily?” Uncle Qiaoba stood up, unable to resist coming forward to look. “What’s going on? How come we couldn’t open it before?”
“That’s not right. I pressed that thing many times!” Sangtu’s wife was also shocked.
Xie Changqing coughed and said hesitantly: “I…
He held back the word “father” and said slowly: “Abu taught me how to open it.”
“Ah?”
It wasn’t that they didn’t believe him, but Xie Changqing had always been a little fool before. Xie Yu had been quite disgusted with him—would he really tell him such important information?
Hearing this, Tana nodded repeatedly. “Yes, Ayu… Xie Yu often taught him to recognize medicinal herbs!”
It was just a pity that Xie Yu would often get angry while teaching and then beat him up… Of course, there was no need to mention that.
While they were still wondering, Xie Changqing had already picked up a vial of medicine to examine it.
It was actually ampicillin, which could be injected to treat the ewes.
Combined with oral terramycin and streptomycin, plus lactase, it would be perfect for treating Sangtu’s sheep.
The only problem was that the medical kit contained only one vial of ampicillin and no other medicines, so it couldn’t treat so many sheep.
“What, what is this?” They didn’t understand.
Qiaoba recognized a few characters, but when he leaned forward, he could only barely make out: “West… um… lin… uh…”
Out of four characters, he only recognized two.
“Isn’t this serum? That’s useless.” Sangtu had already stood up, but he sat back down with a thud, looking dejected. “Making it so mysterious—I thought it was something special!”
Xie Changqing shook his head and explained: “It’s useful. This is ampicillin. It can treat illness.”
“It can treat illness! Is this enough to treat several sheep?”
Would it be enough to save the ewes and lambs?
Xie Changqing wasn’t sure, so he didn’t speak, looking at the medical kit instead.
Then he discovered that when his hand was on the medical kit, it displayed its attributes.
[Level 1 Medical Kit]
[Points: 0]
[Reputation: -300]
[Available for exchange: None]
Xie Changqing was confused. Points being zero he could understand—after all, he’d just gotten this medical kit.
He could even accept reputation being zero, but what did negative three hundred mean?
Looking up, he saw Qiaoba and Sangtu and the others looking at him with conflicted expressions: “Well… Changqing, why don’t you take Batu and the others outside to play for a bit?”
Well, now he understood.
This reputation value was probably his standing in everyone’s eyes.
And given his previous image, forget about reputation—it was already quite remarkable that everyone could treat him like a normal person.
Xie Changqing shook his head and looked at them seriously: “Uncle Qiaoba, Uncle Sangtu, this is ampicillin. It’s medicine that can treat ewes, but… it can only treat ewes.”
“Really?” Sangtu immediately perked up when he heard this, but looking at his face, he became conflicted again. “But…”
It wasn’t that he didn’t trust him—it was just that he used to be a little fool! Was he reliable?
