Chapter 31
Chapter 31: Used Before
Hearing his words, Qiaoba immediately arranged: “Everyone step aside.”
With the area cleared, it became much more convenient.
Xie Changqing put down the medical kit and lifted the blanket.
“Make the fire bigger and move it closer.” As Xie Changqing spoke, he looked carefully.
They had already removed his pants. The wound was still bleeding, but they couldn’t worry about anything else and could only let him lie there.
“He says he feels a bit dizzy,” Qiaoba said, holding up a kerosene lamp, very anxious.
Xie Changqing made an acknowledging sound: “With so much blood loss, he’s definitely going to feel dizzy from the blood loss.”
When the water came, he first rinsed the wound with clean water, then used saline solution to clean away the blood clots.
After removing all the dirt from the wound surface, he pressed gauze directly onto the wound.
Fortunately, the old veterinarian had given him plenty of iodine last time – it came in handy now.
After the wound stopped bleeding, Xie Changqing used iodine to disinfect the skin around the wound.
After disinfection, the wound still wasn’t bleeding. Xie Changqing breathed a sigh of relief.
This was still manageable – the situation wasn’t too bad.
But this gash…
Xie Changqing frowned and looked carefully.
It was quite long, running from near the knee all the way down to the ankle.
Although it wasn’t too deep, in this cold weather, he couldn’t possibly lie in bed without pants every day.
It wasn’t realistic to keep treating it this way.
The best approach would be to use medicine to help it heal faster.
Xie Changqing opened the medical kit and fell into thought.
[Level 2 Medical Kit]
[Points: 3]
[Reputation: -106]
[Available for exchange: Ampicillin… Ribavirin…]
He looked through all the available medicines but couldn’t find tetanus antitoxin or tetanus immunoglobulin.
The other anti-inflammatory drugs were too limited and probably wouldn’t be more effective than the herbal ointment he made himself…
Xie Changqing thought for a moment and said hesitantly: “I have an ointment… it works quite well…”
“Use it, use it!” Sangtu said without hesitation: “If you say it’s good, then use it!”
Anyway, he trusted Xie Changqing unconditionally!
Xie Changqing was stunned and said hesitantly: “But this hasn’t been used on people before…”
However, these herbs could indeed be used on humans, and the effect was quite good.
“…It’s been used… before.” Haierte propped himself up with his arms and managed to sit up halfway: “Use it! That stuff works really well.”
I heard it’s cool and refreshing, and after using it, it doesn’t hurt so much.
Xie Changqing was a bit surprised: “Huh? Who used it before?”
As he asked, his hands weren’t idle – he began taking out the herbal ointment.
Compared to the powder that Haierte had taken to sell at other ranches, what Xie Changqing had was more effective.
Because he had personally prepared it and wrapped it in gauze – now he could just unwrap it and apply it directly.
Such a long wound required two packets of ointment.
After applying the medicine, he carefully wrapped it with gauze.
“Hey, it really is quite cool.” Haierte’s brow relaxed, and he lay back down: “Comfortable.”
Before, the wound had been burning hot – it wasn’t just pain, it was a numbing, burning sensation.
Indeed, as the people from the Seventh Ranch had said, it felt cool and soothing once applied, and the pain was also reduced.
Xie Changqing calmly acknowledged and made sure there were no problems before standing up: “I added mint leaves – they have a cooling and pain-relieving effect.”
Not only that, but these two packets of ointment had been improved from the original formula.
They could reduce inflammation and pain while also helping the wound heal.
“This is…” Sangtu listened in amazement: “Amazing…”
Qiaoba looked at him with wonder in his eyes.
Xie Changqing made a sound and explained: “In the past… I read some books.”
This wasn’t really a lie, because he had indeed read many medical books.
Originally, he had wanted to treat his own illness, but unfortunately, doctors can’t heal themselves – he never did cure it.
However, he did end up treating many cats and dogs along the way, which could be considered accumulating merit.
So now, he was just presenting many things from books that he had never tried himself.
“Oh! That’s really quite impressive!”
In their ranch, there were only a few people who could read.
Hearing this, everyone’s doubts were dispelled.
In their view, people who could read and write were indeed capable.
Even if Xie Changqing had been a fool before, now that he was lucid, he could use the knowledge he had learned before – no wonder he knew so much.
“He’ll need some supplementation later.” Xie Changqing thought for a moment and advised against eating too greasy food: “Do you have any dates? You could make soup with them.”
“No.” Sangtu’s wife thought for a moment and added: “We dug up three ginseng roots the year before last.”
They had used one later, so there were still two left.
Xie Changqing was shocked – my goodness, wild mountain ginseng?
“That… that’s not necessary. No, you can’t use that for supplementation!” Xie Changqing glanced at Haierte.
Using wild mountain ginseng directly might cause his blood to flow backward.
“Maybe just cut off some of the smaller roots and stew them with meat for some soup – that would be fine…”
After all, Haierte had indeed lost quite a bit of blood.
Thinking of this, Xie Changqing felt a bit frustrated: “His wound didn’t hit bone and isn’t too deep – why didn’t you stop the bleeding in time?”
If they had stopped the bleeding promptly, there probably wouldn’t have been so much trouble.
“…”
Everyone looked at each other, all with confused expressions: “How do you stop it?”
Xie Changqing took a deep breath, somewhat speechless: “Didn’t my father… didn’t Xie Yu teach you this?”
“No.” Sangtu rubbed his hands together, somewhat embarrassed: “Usually, we just… spit on it… ahem.”
To be honest, they lived quite roughly.
If you could survive, you survived. If you couldn’t, you died.
Xie Changqing felt his heart was tired. He waved his hand and sighed: “When I have time later, I’ll think about how to teach everyone.”
Basic first aid methods should be understood – after all, he couldn’t always arrive in time.
Hearing this, quite a few people’s eyes lit up.
However, Qiaoba frowned and secretly tugged at his sleeve.
Sangtu’s wife took the water outside and said they hadn’t eaten yet, insisting that Qiaoba and Xie Changqing stay for dinner.
“Ah, I already ate…” Xie Changqing had indeed eaten two flatbreads…
But Qiaoba pulled him aside and said to Sangtu and the others: “Alright, alright, hurry up. I need to have a word with Changqing.”
He pulled Xie Changqing outside and lowered his voice: “Are you crazy? How can you teach people your livelihood skills?”
As the saying goes, teaching the apprentice starves the master – even close brothers settle accounts clearly.
“I think you’re still not completely cured of your foolishness!”
Xie Changqing was confused for a moment, then laughed after understanding: “No, I mean teaching everyone first aid, like how to treat severe bleeding symptoms to save lives.”
Actually, if he really wanted to teach people how to save lives, he wouldn’t know how to teach it either.
But stopping bleeding in time and cleaning wounds – these basics could be taught.
“At least it would prevent them from bleeding to death when they get injured outside…”
“Oh, so that’s what you mean…” Qiaoba realized he had misunderstood and said awkwardly: “That’s fine then…”
After a pause, he added: “But you can only teach our own people, understand?”
And the really important things shouldn’t be taught.
Xie Changqing nodded and sincerely thanked him.
This was genuinely for his own good – otherwise, he would never have mentioned these things.
“Hey, it’s nothing…” Qiaoba patted his shoulder and sighed deeply: “To be honest, I was really afraid this kid would bleed to death… You saved him – that’s really good!”
Their ranch already had so few people, and losing one meant one less…
